Anixa Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: ANIX) is a clinical-stage biotechnology company headquartered in San Jose, California. The Company is developing therapies that harness the immune system to treat and prevent cancer, with two complementary programs already studied in patients: an FSHR-targeted CAR-T therapy for ovarian cancer, and an alpha-lactalbumin targeted vaccine for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer.

Each program is advanced with a leading research or clinical institution, which lets Anixa pursue several scientific approaches at once across both treatment and prevention.

Management team

Amit Kumar, Ph.D.

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Kumar has been an investor, founder, director and CEO of several technology enterprises, both public and private. As CEO, he took CombiMatrix Corporation public and ran it for a decade while listed on the NASDAQ Global Market. He has worked in venture capital with OAK Investment Partners, and has been an advisor to investment funds, venture capital firms, and Fortune 500 companies. He was on the Board of Directors of Acacia Research Corporation from 2002-2008. Dr. Kumar is currently Chairman and CEO of Anixa Biosciences and he sits on the Board of other public and private companies. He has served on the Board of the American Cancer Society since 2016. He received his AB in Chemistry from Occidental College. After graduate studies at Stanford University and Caltech, he received his Ph.D. from Caltech and followed that with a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard.

Michael Catelani

President, COO & CFO

Mr. Catelani is a seasoned executive with over 30 years of finance and operations management experience. He currently serves as President, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer of Anixa Biosciences. Previously, Mr. Catelani cofounded Tacere Therapeutics, Inc., a privately held biotech company, and served as its Chairman, President & Chief Financial Officer until its sale. Prior to Tacere, Mr. Catelani served on the Board of Directors and was the Chief Financial Officer of Benitec Biopharma Limited, an Australian Stock Exchange-listed biotech company. Mr. Catelani was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Axon Instruments, a leading designer and manufacturer of instrumentation and software systems for biotechnology and diagnostics research. Axon was a U.S. corporation publicly traded on the Australian Stock Exchange. Previously, he was the Vice President of Finance for Media Arts Group, Inc., an NYSE-listed company. Mr. Catelani has also worked with several early-stage start-ups in a variety of industries, including biotechnology, cleantech and retail, in both advisory and management roles and has served as a contract CFO for a number of established businesses in the biotech field. Mr. Catelani began his professional career at Ernst & Young and is a CPA (Inactive). He received his BS degree in business administration, with a concentration in accountancy from Sacramento State University and earned his MBA from the University of California, Davis.

Pamela D. Garzone, Ph.D.

Chief Development Officer

Dr. Garzone is a senior pharmaceutical executive with over 25 years of diverse experience in the industry and is recognized for her strategic, scientific, clinical and regulatory leadership in drug development. Prior to joining Anixa, Dr. Garzone held executive roles in clinical development with several companies, including Calibr, a division of the Scripps Research Institute, and Pfizer. She previously held positions of increasing responsibility at companies such as Elan Pharmaceuticals and Genetics Institute, starting her industry career at Genentech. Prior to her industry experience, she was an Assistant Professor, Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. She earned a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University and an M.S. in Pharmacy Practice from the University of Pittsburgh. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lew Titterton

Lead Independent Director

Mr. Titterton previously served as a Director from August 2010 through August 2016, the last four years of which as Chairman of the Board. He also served as a Director from July 1999 to January 2003. Mr. Titterton's background is in high technology with an emphasis on health care. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of NYMED, Inc., a diversified health services company. Mr. Titterton founded MedE America, Inc. in 1986 and was Chief Executive Officer of Management and Planning Services, Inc. from 1978 to 1986. He holds an MBA from the State University of New York at Albany, and a BA degree from Cornell University.

Arnold Baskies, MD

Director

Dr. Baskies, former Chairman of the national Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, is a fellowship trained surgical oncologist with special interests in breast cancer, thyroid cancer, and melanoma. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Boston University, graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine, completed his surgical residency at Boston Medical Center, and received a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute.

Emily Gottschalk

Director

Emily Gottschalk is an experienced marketer with over 30 years of developing products for the consumer marketplace. She is the founder and CEO of The Garr Group, Inc, a diverse entertainment and new product development company that sells entertainment and general merchandise to the mass, specialty and on-line market. Mass retail customers include Walmart, Sam’s, Walgreens, Target, and others. Past partners include AARP, Intel, Walmart, Disney, Fox, Kellogg’s, Kraft and MLB. TGG, Inc identifies “white space” opportunities in the marketplace and defines and develops products that uniquely touch consumers’ lives. TGG is equally focused on brick and mortar, on-line and emerging distribution channels. Previously, she was Marketing Director of Zany Brainy, a children’s educational toy store that she helped launch. Since 1997, Ms. Gottschalk’s companies have produced over 150 million CD’s/DVD’s to the US retail market, developed a proprietary Android tablet called “RealPad, by AARP” with Intel and has created private label brands across the home, sporting goods and electronics market. She is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and serves on the board of Anixa Biosciences, a publicly traded biotechnology company. She is co-founder of the Mildred M. Soefer Foundation offering philanthropic support to Jewish causes and sick children, Entrepreneur in Residence for Cornell University and a strategic, marketing consultant to Jewish Federation of Southern NJ.

Michael Shepard, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Shepard was a recipient of the 2019 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award in recognition of his research work in improving patient lives in the field of oncology. He also received the Warren Alpert Prize, an annual award granted by The Warren Alpert Foundation, for his pioneering research in the field of modern cancer. Dr. Shepard’s many successes include work that led to the discovery, development and launch of Herceptin®, one of the best-selling cancer drugs of all time.

Jose Conejo-Garcia, MD, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Conejo-Garcia completed his medical degree at the University of Zaragoza, in Spain. After a residency in Clinical Chemistry, he completed his PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Alcala, also in Spain, in 1998. He completed post doctorate training in pancreatic cancer at the University of Bern, Switzerland, the following year. He then moved to Germany to lead a project of the discovery and characterization of antimicrobial peptides. In 2001 he joined the ovarian cancer team at the University of Pennsylvania that identified for the first time the role of T cell responses in the outcome of ovarian cancer patients. He then joined the Department of Immunology at Dartmouth College, before moving back to the Penn Campus to lead the Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis Program at The Wistar Institute. Dr. Conejo-Garcia joined Moffitt in November 2016.

Dr. Jose Conejo-Garcia is the Chair of the Department of Immunology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research Institute. He is also co-leader of the Immunology Program at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.

Dr. Conejo-Garcia’s research program focuses on understanding and targeting mechanisms governing the balance between immunosuppression and protective immunity in the tumor microenvironment, with an emphasis on the role of cancer-driven pathological myelopoiesis.

By combining translational understanding and clinical specimens with mechanistic studies in mouse models, Dr. Conejo-Garcia has contributed to elucidate many of the mechanisms driving protective immunity against gynecologic cancers that have been unveiled in recent years, as demonstrated by >100 of recent articles that total >9,000 citations in Scopus. Those include manuscripts in The New England Journal of Medicine, Cell, Nature Medicine, Cancer Cell, Immunity and Cancer Discovery. He is the principal investigator of 3 active RO1s on the immunobiology of ovarian cancer, and collaborates with other investigators in other funded research projects. Dr. Conejo-Garcia serves as a reviewer on several editorial boards and has completed his tenure as a chartered member of the TTT NIH study section. He has been invited to present or chair sessions at over 30 national and international events including Paris, France; Guangzhou, China; Hannover, Germany; Valencia, Spain; Valdivia, Chile; and Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Marco Davila, MD, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Marco Davila is a medical oncologist in the Department of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. His clinical focus is utilizing cell therapies to treat patients with hematologic malignancies. He obtained his MD and PhD degrees at the Duke University School of Medicine and trained in medicine and medical oncology at NY Presbyterian Weill-Cornell and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, respectively. He is a clinical expert with significant experience with gene-engineered T cell therapies that are revolutionizing cancer therapy. It is Dr. Davila’s goal to translate innovative laboratory development for the benefit of patients at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Davila’s research has been acknowledged with grants and/or awards from the American Society of Hematology, Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Daniel Abate-Daga, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Abate-Daga completed his undergraduate studies in clinical biochemistry at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Argentina), and his PhD in Health and Life Sciences at the Pompeu Fabra University and Centre for Genomic Regulation (Barcelona, Spain). He completed post doctorate training in cancer immunotherapy and gene therapy, under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Rosenberg, at the Surgery Branch of the National Institutes of Health. He then joined Moffitt Cancer Center in the summer of 2015, as an Assistant Member of the Department of Immunology.

Studying the molecular events that govern the correct function of genetically-modified human T cells, Dr. Abate-Daga combines technologies and expertise gathered from various fields, including systems biology, synthetic biology, basic immunology, and genomics, among others. His group is interested in understanding how a new generation of immune receptors (Chimeric Antigen Receptors, conventional T-cell receptors, and others) can be designed to outperform the current products, in both antitumor efficacy and safety. Dr. Abate-Daga’s team is also interested in identifying novel targets for cancer therapy, and in taking advantage of the unique biological properties of gamma/delta T cells for the treatment of various solid tumors.

Dr. Abate-Daga is the author of 24 peer-reviewed original manuscripts and book chapters that have been published in journals such as the J. Clinical Oncology, Blood, Clinical Cancer Research, Molecular Therapy, Human Gene Therapy, and Oncoimmunology, among others. In addition, he has served as ad hoc reviewer for various scientific publications, including Scientific Reports, New Journal of Science, Molecular Therapy, and Neoplasia. Dr. Abate-Daga has been the recipient of NIH Skin SPORE Career Enhancement Program and Developmental Research Program Awards. Dr. Abate-Daga has been invited to present in multiple research forums, including the Canadian Cancer Immunotherapy Consortium (Montreal, Canada), the World Preclinical Congress (Boston, MA), the conference on New Frontiers in Urologic Oncology (Clearwater, FL), the National Center for Tumor Disease (Heidelberg, Germany), and the Institut d’Investigacions Biomediques August Pi i Sunyer (Barcelona, Spain), among others.

Linda Kelley, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Linda Kelley is a Senior Member and Director of the Cell Therapy facility at Moffitt Cancer Center. Previously she was the head of the Cell Therapy facility at Dana Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard. As director of the Cell Therapy Facility at Moffitt Cancer Center, Dr. Kelley is responsible for manufacture and compliance of approved cell therapies for stem cell transplantation of malignant and benign disease, as well as experimental therapies for immune modulation of cancer treatment. In this capacity, she oversees 22 investigational new drug applications for on-going clinical trials. Dr. Kelley received her PhD in Pathology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University, where she also completed a fellowship in Hematology.

Ian Frazer, MD

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Ian Frazer is a professor at the University of Queensland where he leads a research team working at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane, Australia on the immunobiology of epithelial cancers. Additionally, he currently serves as the President of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and as a member of the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council. He also chairs the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board of the Medical Research Future Fund. In addition to his positions in science and academia, Dr. Frazer serves on the boards of several corporations and not-for-profit organizations, including Jingang Medicine (Aus) Pty Ltd., Microba Pty Ltd and the Frazer Family Foundation. Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Frazer was recognized as Australian of the Year in 2006. He was recipient of the Prime Ministers Prize for Science and the Balzan Prize, both in 2008, followed in 2012 by his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. He was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia in 2013. Dr. Frazer is a named inventor on patents relating to HPV prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines licenced to CSL, Merck & Co. and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and on patents on DNA vaccines and on optimizing therapeutic protein expression licensed to Jingang Medicine (Aus) Pty Ltd.

Dr. Baskies is a specialist in surgical oncology and general surgery, affiliated with Virtua Health Systems. He is former Chairman of the National Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society and current Chair of the society’s Global Cancer Control Advisory Council. He is a member of the Global Breast Cancer Initiative, World Health Organization (WHO), and Director and Scientific Advisory Board Member of Anixa Biosciences.

Kevin Cullen, MD

Greenebaum Distinguished Professor in Oncology

Dr. Cullen is the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Distinguished Professor in Oncology and Director of the Program in Oncology at the UMSOM. He also serves as director of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2011, Dr. Cullen was appointed by President Obama to a five-year term as a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board, an advisory committee to the NCI. He previously served as Chairman of the Board of the American Cancer Society and is a recipient of the ACS Excellence in Research Award. Dr. Cullen received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He conducted his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA, and fellowship in oncology with the NCI in Bethesda, MD.

Judith Fitzgerald, BCPA

Patient Advocate

Judith Fitzgerald is a lifelong educator whose mission evolved after her 2009 bilateral breast cancer diagnosis, inspiring her to empower women with knowledge about breast cancer prevention. Following her treatment in 2010, she became a passionate advocate for primary prevention, supporting the pioneering breast cancer vaccine research of Dr. Vincent K. Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic for more than sixteen years and serving as a patient advocate on the Phase I clinical trial. A Komen Advocate in Science, Judith reviews research for the Department of Defense CDMRP Breast Cancer Research Program and Susan G. Komen. She has contributed her expertise to the National Cancer Institute and the FDA’s Project Optimus initiative. She is a graduate of the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Project LEAD® and the AACR Scientist–Survivor Program. Currently, she serves as Education Lead for Advocates for Collaborative Education as well as an Advisory Advocate for Friends of Cancer Research and Exact Sciences’ Oncotype DX® biomarker test. Judith holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Providence College and shares her work at www.Sisters4Prevention.com.

Mark A. Goldberg, MD

American Cancer Society

Dr. Goldberg is a longtime American Cancer Society and ACS Cancer Action Network volunteer. He has been a member of the ACS Eastern New England Board since 2017; and a member of the ACS national board of directors since 2019, serving as Board Scientific Officer since 2022. Dr. Goldberg currently serves on the boards of directors of ImmunoGen, GlycoMimetics, Blueprint Medicines, Avacta Group, and Walden Biosciences. He previously served as a member of the ACS New England Division Board from 2010 to 2017; was part of the executive management team of Synageva Biopharma from 2011 to 2014; and served in various management capacities of increasing responsibility at Genzyme Corporation from 1996 to 2011, including as Senior Vice President of Clinical Development. Prior to joining Genzyme, Dr. Goldberg was a full-time staff physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he still holds an appointment. He is also currently a lecturer in medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Goldberg received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and his medical degree from the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology.

Carmen Guerra, MD, MSCE, FACP

Perelman Professor of Medicine

Dr. Guerra is the Ruth C. and Raymond G. Perelman Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also the Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for the Abramson Cancer Center. Dr. Guerra’s research is focused on developing and evaluating interventions to increase the participation of populations in cancer screening and cancer clinical trials. Dr. Guerra developed and currently oversees the Penn Medicine Colorectal Cancer Screening Navigation Program and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program which have screened thousands of individuals and provided patient navigation to diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Guerra is also the site Principal Investigator of the NCI-funded Self-collection for HPV Testing to Improve Cervical Cancer Prevention (SHIP) Trial, a platform trial which compares the accuracy of self- and clinician-collected samples of multiple HPV collection kits and assays. The results of the SHIP trial are being submitted to the FDA and led to the approval of the first at home HPV test for cervical cancer screening. Dr. Guerra also is member of the American Cancer Society (ACS) Clinical Guidelines Development group and an author of the ACS colorectal, cervical, lung, and prostate clinical practice guidelines and the ACS guidance to clinicians for Multi-cancer Early Detection Tests, all which widely influence clinical practice. Dr. Guerra was a member of the national board of directors of the American Cancer Society from 2016 to 2023 and served as the Board Scientific Officer.

Dan Heist

Director of Internal Audit

Mr. Heist has been the Director of Internal Audit at Penn State since 2003, bringing more than 30 years of auditing and accounting experience. He is active with the American Cancer Society, serving at the local, state, and national level; and is a past Chairman of the Board of the American Cancer Society. Previously, Mr. Heist was a Senior Manager at Deloitte & Touche, LLP, and served a variety of both privately and publicly held manufacturing and service industry clients. He received a bachelor of science degree from Penn State.

Karen E. Knudsen, MBA, Ph.D.

Former CEO, American Cancer Society

Dr. Knudsen has been the CEO of the American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, since 2021. She previously served as Executive Vice President of Oncology Services and Enterprise Director for Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson Health; President for the Association of American Cancer Institutes, representing the 102 leading cancer centers in North America; and on the board of directors of the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Knudsen serves on the board of advisors for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and on 12 external advisory boards for NCI-designated cancer centers. She is an active member of several committees with the American Society for Clinical Oncology, in addition to serving on other academic and for-profit advisory boards. Dr. Knudsen holds a bachelor's degree in biology from George Washington University, a PhD in biological sciences from the University of California San Diego, and an MBA from Temple University Fox School of Business.

Len Lichtenfeld, MD, MACP

Medical Oncologist & Consultant

Dr. Lichtenfeld is an experienced medical oncologist and independent consultant with an extensive background in cancer care, cancer research, healthcare policy, and physician payment. He is a member of the CancerCare board of directors, and an advisor to several early-stage patient- and cancer-focused companies, including Trialjectory and OneHealth. Dr. Lichtenfeld was previously the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College (now Drexel University College of Medicine) and medical training at Temple University, Johns Hopkins and the National Cancer Institute.

Michael T. Marquardt

CEO, Global Kompass Strategies

Mr. Marquardt is the CEO of Global Kompass Strategies, serving as a global advisor to corporations around the world; and CEO of Epi One, a biotech company building a new cancer diagnosis platform. He previously led several companies in the technology and healthcare sectors, and served as President of the global risk management firm founded by former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh. Mr. Marquardt has served on the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network boards of directors since 2018 and 2014, respectively, and formerly as Chair of the former American Cancer Society South Atlantic Division Board and Chairman of the American Cancer Society National Board. He received the Society’s St. George National Award in 2017, and was appointed in January 2022 by President Biden to serve on the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. Mr. Marquardt received a bachelor’s degree in medical biology, humanities from the University of New England; and a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia.

Scarlott Mueller, MPH, RN, FAAN

ACS Cancer Action Network

Ms. Mueller currently serves on the board of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. She has volunteered with the American Cancer Society for more than 35 years and has held numerous committee and leadership positions, including board President/Chair of the former Florida Division and Chair of the American Cancer Society national board of directors. She recently completed four years as a board member of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care. She has served on the boards of various organizations, including President of the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation, President of the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, Chair of the Oncology Nursing Society-Nominating Committee, and the Samaritan Counseling Center of North Central Florida. Ms. Mueller served 21 years as the Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for the North Florida Regional Medical Center. She received a master of public health degree and a bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gary Reedy

Former CEO, American Cancer Society

Mr. Reedy was CEO of the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network from 2015 to 2021, following 15 years of volunteer leadership, including chairing the boards of directors for the organizations. He previously served as Worldwide Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy at Johnson & Johnson, President of Ortho Biotech, and in senior leadership roles at SmithKline Beecham and Centocor. He holds appointments to the board of directors of the Center for Global Health Innovation, the board of councilors for The Carter Center, the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, the Dean’s Council at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, the Advisory Board for Emory University’s Center for Ethics, and the MMM Tech Advisory Council. Mr. Reedy graduated from Emory & Henry College and received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Arcadia University.

Rob Youle, JD

Attorney

Mr. Youle is a civil practice attorney based in Denver, Colorado. He was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for nearly 30 years, serving at the local, state, regional and national levels. Mr. Youle served as Chairman of the Board of the American Cancer Society’s former Colorado and Rocky Mountain Divisions, its Great West Division and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He served on the American Cancer Society National Board since 2006 and was Chairman in 2015. Mr. Youle received a bachelor of science degree in finance from the Gies College of Business - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Juris Doctor degree from University of Iowa College of Law.

Sanjay Juneja, MD

Hematologist & Medical Oncologist

Dr. Sanjay Juneja is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist currently practicing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is the host of the internationally engaged 'Target: Cancer Podcast,' and carries over one-half million followers through his media brand 'TheOncDoc.'

Dr. Juneja served on the White House Leaders in Social Media roundtable and has been featured by The Washington Post, CNBC, PBS, and WebMD, among many others. Dr. Juneja is an editorial board member for the peer-reviewed research journal AI in Precision Oncology, and a contributor to Entrepreneur Magazine. He is the CSO of The Darwin Foundation, collectively devoted to the implementation of prevention and cure of malignancy globally, and Director Emeritus for the WIN (Worldwide Innovative Networking in personalized cancer medicine) Consortium.

Dr. Rugo is a leader and specialist in breast cancer research and recipient of numerous awards. She is Professor, Department of Medicine (Hematology/Oncology), and Director, Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education, at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is Co-chair of the Triple Negative Working Group, a member of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium (TBCRC), Alliance Breast Committee of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (formerly CALGB), and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Stephen Schoenberger, Ph.D.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology; UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center

Dr. Schoenberger is a translational immunologist working in the area of precision cancer immunotherapy. He is a professor in the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology and Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
